Setting Up Your CNAME with Amazon Route 53 (AWS)

Follow

Before you add a CNAME record to your Amazon Route 53 account, you may want to add your domain into Unbounce first. See our complete guide on how to Connect Your Domain in Unbounce.

For more detailed steps from Amazon, see their full documentation: Creating records by using the Amazon Route 53 console

Add a CNAME Record to Your Amazon Route 53 Hosted Domain

  1. Log in & navigate to Amazon Route 53 via Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Are you having some trouble logging in? Sign-in options may depend on your permissions roles, either IAM user or root user roles.
  2. Once logged in, click the hamburger menu icon on the left-hand side, and menu options will appear.
  3. Select Hosted zones from the left-hand side menu option.
  4. Select the domain name that you’d like to update with a CNAME record.
  5. From the Hosted zone details page of your custom domain, you will see info relating to the domain & any existing records.
  6. Click on the orange Create record button.

    • The Record name will be the subdomain you would like to use for your landing pages (e.g., if your custom domain in Unbounce is get.mylandingpage.com, the Record name in Amazon Route 53 is ‘get’).
    • From the Record type drop-down menu, select CNAME.
    • The Value field refers to the unique CNAME ID generated by the Unbounce app.
    • TTL can be left as-is or set to 3600 seconds (this is the amount of time your server holds on to cached information before it refreshes to show any updates).“cname-record-setup-in-aws”
  7. Click the Create records button on the bottom-right to save the changes, and you’re all set!

If you notice any errors in Amazon Route 53 when attempting to save the CNAME records, please contact AWS directly, as there may be some conflicting records causing this.

Do note that it can take up to 48 hours for newly-created records to take effect.

Once your CNAME is ready and fully propagated in the Unbounce app, you can publish your pages where you want. To do so, you’ll want to change the URL of your landing page in the Unbounce app.
