Creating a Custom 404 Page

Follow

No customer of yours wants to land on a 404 page. Sometimes, a domain with plenty of 404 pages can impact SEO rankings.

The best 404 pages are customized and communicate clearly that a page won't be found but maintain a friendly, helpful experience for the visitor (and often link back to an active page).

If you choose not to customize your 404 page, your customers will see the following generic 404 page:
A 404 landing page in Unbounce.

Creating a 404 Page

  1. Create and design new page in Unbounce that you'll use as your 404 page.
  2. Click on your page's URL at the top of the Page Overview. A new dialog box will appear:
Gif demo of a user clicking the URL at the top of the Page Overview to change the URL.
  3. In the new change your URL dialog box, change the URL path to 404:
Editing the page path field to a 404 file path.
  4. Click the Save URL button to finalize the changes.
  5. Publish your page.

Pro Tip:

We don't recommend that you make your 404 pages indexable. It's best to hide this landing page from search engines. See how to hide your pages from search engines in Smart Builder or Classic Builder.

That's it! Now, if anyone visits a URL for your custom domain that doesn't exist, they'll see your custom 404 page instead of the generic one. Repeat steps 1-3 for each domain if you have multiple custom domains.
